• By watering only in the early morning or late evening, one can save up to 20 gallons per quarter acre per watering. This calculation assumes the homeowner is applying 1 inch of water an average of 3 times a week, or 42 waterings from June to September.
• By not watering on a hot or windy day, this calculation assumes that no water is applied to the lawn on an average of 13 days, realizing a water savings of 3,267 gallons per quarter acre of 1-inch watering. It is assumed that 0.5 gallons of water per 1 square foot of lawn are lost through evaporation on hot or windy days.
• By not watering in late summer, this calculation assumes that late summer is 6 weeks long (August to mid-September) and that 6,534 gallons of water per quarter acre are applied each week (~1 inch of water/square foot).
• By not watering all summer long, this calculation assumes that you won’t water your lawn from Memorial Day to Labor Day (15 weeks) and that 6,534 gallons of water per quarter acre is applied each week (~1 inch of water/square foot).

What does it all mean?

Between the water we drink, use to shower, flush our toilets, wash our clothes and dishes, and use to keep our lawns green, the average American family uses about 300 gallons of water every day. That’s more than seven full bathtubs! Such high demand could put a strain on our water resources.

Taking shorter showers, using more efficient equipment, changing our lawn care practices, and other related activities can help protect those resources so that they remain affordable today and available for future generations.
