Storm Drain Checklist
Great! You’ve adopted a storm drain, or maybe more than one! Just remember to follow these simple steps to stay committed to your pledge.
- Clear leaves, sticks, and other debris
- Remove any grass clippings
- Dispose of litter that has collected around the storm drain
- Clear snow and ice blocking storm drain during the winter
- Report polluters here
There is some equipment you may need to clean a storm drain.
- Trash bags to dispose of the litter that has collected around the drain
- Rake (or broom) to move the leaves or grass clippings away from the drain
- Shovel to scoop litter away from the drain and place it into the trash bag
- Gloves to protect your hands
If you do not have equipment, and live in Marion County, please check out the Marion County Tool Loan program or work with Keep Indianapolis Beautiful to see if you can borrow tools to clean the drain. If you don’t live in Marion County, look for tool loan/rental programs in the city or county in which you live.
If you find that the drains are too impacted to clean out, you can escalate the drainage concerns to either Citizens Energy Group or Indy DPW.
Lastly, send us your before and after pictures and we can feature them on social media!
We (and our water resources) are so grateful to you for taking these steps to improve water quality.
